Growing[]
- Main article: Cabbage
Sowing[]
- Indoors
Sow thinly in trays and cover with a fine layer of compost. Firm gently and keep moist. Cover trays with glass, polythene or a propagator lid and keep at approximately 10-15°C (50-60°F).[2]
- Outdoors
Sow thinly in rows 23cm (9in) apart. Cover with 1.5cm (½in) of fine soil. Firm gently and keep moist.[2]
Transplanting[]
- Indoors
Remove cover once seedlings appear. Transplant 5cm (2in) apart to further trays when large enough to handle. Stand outside for a few days from April (avoid frosts) then plant out to growing positions, space 60cm (2ft) apart. Closer spacing will produce smaller cabbages.
- Outdoors
Transplant to growing position when seedlings are 8-10cm (3-4in) tall, allowing 60cm (2ft) between rows and plants. Closer spacing will produce smaller cabbages. Firm in and water well.[2]
Aftercare[]
Keep moist and weed free.[2]
Harvesting[]
September to November. Cut cabbage stalk at the base.
